In a significant step toward bridging the digital divide, Peñasco Valley Telephone Cooperative, Inc. (PVT) has been awarded two crucial cost share grants from the NM Office of Broadband Access and Expansion (OBAE) to expand high-speed fiber internet access to underserved rural areas. The grants, totaling over $6.1 million with PVT’s matching component, will bring connectivity that will enhance the quality of life in these communities.

These cost share grants consist of two separate awards. The first grant will provide additional infrastructure to serve remote locations near Mayhill and Lincoln. This is a game-changer for these residents, who will soon enjoy the same cutting-edge connectivity that city dwellers take for granted.

The second grant will supplement USDA loans that are being utilized to build fiber to the home in areas around the communities of Hondo, Tinnie, San Patricio, Glencoe, Arabela, Lincoln, Mayhill, Weed, Sacramento, Pinon, Dunken, Loco Hills, Lakewood, Hope and Artesia. These supplemental funds will be utilized to reinforce the existing poles to allow for the additional fiber optic cables.

“PVT is committed to reaching rural areas with fiber broadband that will provide the essential internet service required today and in the future,” said Mitch Hibbard, COO for PVT.  “Fiber broadband technology is the most reliable, secure and scalable infrastructure for future needs. It is the best option for telemedicine, education, security, remote employment, entertainment and is the only technology that increases property values just by having it available.

PVT is deeply grateful to the state government for deploying these funds to help smaller communities in our state. These projects underscore our commitment to overcoming the digital divide, ensuring that rural communities are not left behind.
